RTP Play

RTP Play functions as the centralized over-the-top streaming platform and digital video-on-demand repository of Portugal's public service broadcaster, Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). Transmitting live linear television simulcasts and specialized sports overflow feeds via adaptive bitrate HLS unicast delivery pipelines across Apple TV, Android TV, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, modern desktop web browsers, and mobile devices, the platform provides direct-to-consumer access across mainland Portugal, Madeira, and the Azores. Its sports broadcasting roster centers on protected sporting events of national cultural significance, delivering free-to-air digital telecasts of the Portuguese national football team (UEFA Nations League, European Championship, and FIFA World Cup qualifiers), shared live coverage of the Taça de Portugal, the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, the Olympic Games, the Volta a Portugal cycling race, alongside major domestic handball, rink hockey, and futsal championship rounds.

Video transmission outputs up to 1080p high definition operating at 50 frames per second with stereo 2.0 audio feeds, featuring domestic Portuguese play-by-play commentary panels alongside pitchside reporting. Digital broadcast mechanics incorporate an automated 7-day backward electronic program guide catch-up buffer (Gravações / Ver do Início), in-player live restart controls, and an on-demand sports archive where full match replays, Sunday sports analysis from Desporto 2, and condensed highlight packages remain accessible for rolling 30-day windows post-broadcast. Because the service functions as an open-access public service library, personal cloud DVR recording functionality is omitted. Playback concurrency permits up to two simultaneous active client display sessions per user profile across residential broadband and mobile networks. Digital app transmission strictly enforces Portuguese territorial IP address geolocation verification on all sports rights, blacking out international traffic while permitting temporary cross-border streaming across European Union member states for authenticated domestic accounts under statutory EU digital portability regulations.
