About Slovenian 1. SNL
The Slovenian 1. SNL (Prva slovenska nogometna liga), commercially designated as Prva liga Telemach, is the top tier of men's professional football in Slovenia, governed by the Football Association of Slovenia (NZS). Founded in 1991 following the nation's independence, the league runs from July through late May with a winter break from mid-December to February. Ten clubs contest a thirty-six-match schedule to crown the national champion and allocate Slovenia's qualifying berths for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Conference League.
Top teams
NK Maribor stands as the most successful club in league history with sixteen championship titles, maintaining a fierce rivalry with Olimpija Ljubljana in the Eternal Derby (Večni derbi). In recent seasons, NK Celje has emerged as a powerhouse, capturing multiple league titles and making deep European runs, joined at the top end of the table by FC Koper and NŠ Mura. Matches at Ljudski vrt in Maribor and Stožice Stadium in Ljubljana draw the league's largest crowds, while competitive regional sides regularly challenge the title favorites on tight pitches across the country.
Format
Ten teams compete in a quadruple round-robin format, facing each opponent four times—twice at home and twice away—for a total of 36 matches. The club finishing top of the table after 36 rounds wins the Slovenian championship and enters the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League, while the second- and third-placed teams earn spots in the UEFA Conference League alongside the Slovenian Cup winner. At the bottom of the table, the tenth-placed side is automatically relegated to the 2. SNL, while the ninth-placed team plays a two-legged relegation playoff against the runner-up of the second division.
Viewership
Domestic broadcasting in Slovenia is shared between Sportklub and Šport TV. Šport TV holds primary first-pick rights to broadcast one marquee match per round live on Šport TV 1, while Sportklub Slovenia carries the remaining fixtures across its channels and streaming platforms, alongside regional coverage in neighboring Balkan territories through United Media networks. Digital coverage, highlights, and official federation feeds are accessible through the official league portal and NZS media channels, with high-stakes derby rounds and European qualification clashes driving peak domestic television ratings.
