About Italian Lega Basket
Lega Basket Serie A (LBA) is the top tier of men's professional club basketball in Italy, governed by the Lega Basket under the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP). Running from October through June, sixteen teams contest a thirty-game regular season followed by championship playoffs to claim the national title, the scudetto. Blending tactical half-court sets, high-contact interior defense, and steady perimeter shooting, the league functions as one of Europe's premier domestic basketball circuits and decides Italy's qualifiers for the EuroLeague, EuroCup, and Basketball Champions League.
Top teams
Olimpia Milano leads the historical championship table with over thirty league titles, matched in modern title showdowns by traditional rival Virtus Bologna. These two EuroLeague powerhouses dominate national title series, but face stiff regular tests from competitive clubs across northern and central Italy. Brescia, Reyer Venezia, Bertram Derthona Tortona, Dinamo Sassari, and Aquila Basket Trento regularly contest playoff positions, while passionate regional arenas like Varese and Cantù maintain historic rivalries and create hostile road atmospheres for visiting favorites.
Format
The sixteen clubs contest a 30-round regular season, playing every opponent home and away. At the midway point after fifteen rounds, the top eight teams qualify for the mid-season Coppa Italia Final Eight tournament. At the end of the full regular season, the top eight teams enter the postseason playoffs, consisting of seeded best-of-five series through the quarterfinals, semifinals, and scudetto finals. At the bottom of the standings, the two lowest-ranked clubs are relegated directly to Serie A2.
Viewership
Domestic broadcasting in Italy is anchored by the league's proprietary digital streaming service, LBA TV, which streams every regular-season, playoff, and cup game live and on demand alongside highlight packages. Linear television coverage of marquee matchups and playoff series is shared domestically across Warner Bros. Discovery platforms via Eurosport and Nove, as well as selected games on DAZN. International followers outside Italy stream fixtures through regional sports partners and dedicated subscription basketball feeds, driven by fierce Milan-Bologna derbies that consistently fill arenas like the Unipol Forum and Segafredo Arena.
