About EFL Cup
The EFL Cup, known as the Carabao Cup under its title sponsorship, is the primary knockout cup competition for the 92 clubs across England's top four professional divisions. Running from August through February or March, the tournament hands out the English season's first major piece of silverware and awards the winner a playoff spot in the UEFA Conference League. Because fixtures take place on midweek evenings, the tournament is defined by electric atmospheres under the floodlights, rotated lineups, and classic cup upsets by lower-league underdogs.
Top teams
Liverpool leads the historical leaderboard with ten titles, while Manchester City has dominated the modern era with repeated cup runs. Premier League mainstays like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United treat deep cup runs as early momentum builders, while ambitious clubs such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa push hard for domestic silverware. Since heavy rotation is common in the early rounds, lower-division sides from the Championship and League One regularly knock off top-flight opponents.
Format
The tournament brings together 92 teams from the Premier League, Championship, League One, and League Two in an unseeded knockout draw. Top-flight clubs outside of Europe enter in the second round, while sides competing in UEFA continental tournaments enter in the third round. All matches from the opening rounds through the quarterfinals are single-elimination games settled on the night, skipping extra time to go straight to a penalty shootout if scores are level after 90 minutes. The semifinals are played across two legs, home and away, before heading to Wembley Stadium for the one-off final.
Viewership
In the UK, live coverage is led by Sky Sports and the Sky Sports+ platform across every round. ITV also carries live coverage of select matches, including the semifinals and the Wembley final, on ITV1 and ITVX. In the United States, games stream live on Paramount+. International coverage is carried by DAZN in Canada, beIN Sports across Australia and the Middle East, and regional sport networks worldwide, drawing strong midweek ratings and packed stadium crowds.
