About WNBA
The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is the premier professional basketball league for women, founded in 1996 and governed in partnership with the NBA. Contested from May through October across North America, the league brings together fifteen professional franchises competing across a 44-game regular season and postseason playoffs. Renowned for its elite half-court tactical execution, fast perimeter ball movement, and defensive physical presence, the competition features the sharpest concentration of top-tier talent in women's global basketball.
Top teams
Championship contention is anchored by modern heavyweights New York Liberty, Las Vegas Aces, and Minnesota Lynx, competing alongside historic four-time champions Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury. The Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream have developed into fierce playoff threats, while the debut of expansion clubsโincluding the Golden State Valkyries, Toronto Tempo, and Portland Fireโhas added fresh market depth across the league. Star talent like A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Caitlin Clark, Sabrina Ionescu, and Napheesa Collier regularly drive sellout arena atmospheres and high-intensity playoff showdowns.
Format
The regular season sees each franchise play a 44-game schedule, interrupted in mid-season by the WNBA All-Star Game and the in-season WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. The top eight teams with the best winning percentages advance to the postseason playoffs regardless of conference affiliation. The First Round uses a best-of-three series played in a 1-1-1 home-court format, followed by best-of-five semifinals (2-2-1). The postseason culminates in the best-of-seven WNBA Finals (contested in a 2-2-1-1-1 configuration) to determine the league champion.
Viewership
In the United States, national live coverage is shared across major broadcast partners Disney (ABC and ESPN), NBC Sports (NBC, USA Network, and streaming via Peacock), and Amazon Prime Video, with supplementary national windows carried on ION and CBS Sports Network. In Spain, live games and playoff broadcasts air on Movistar Plus+ across its sports packages. Outside exclusive regional windows, global audiences access multi-feed live games, real-time statistics, and complete on-demand archives via the league's proprietary direct-to-consumer platform, WNBA League Pass.
