About English National League
The National League is the fifth division of English football and the top tier of the non-league pyramid. Running from August through May, twenty-four clubs play a forty-six-match schedule to win a place in the English Football League (EFL). While historically amateur, the division is now almost entirely professional. Clubs balance full-time player contracts and long cross-country travel with the pressure of a promotion bottleneck where only two teams go up each season.
Top teams
The division features former EFL clubs aiming to climb back into League Two alongside fast-rising community setups. Well-supported sides like Oldham Athletic, Southend United, Hartlepool United, Forest Green Rovers, and Yeovil Town routinely draw four-figure home crowds, while clubs like Barnet, Solihull Moors, and Gateshead consistently challenge for the promotion spots. Competitive depth across the table means that top clubs regularly drop points on winter road trips against sides fighting relegation.
Format
All twenty-four teams play a double round-robin season, meeting each opponent once at home and once away. The regular-season champions earn the only automatic promotion place to EFL League Two. Teams finishing second through seventh qualify for a six-team playoff bracket: fourth plays seventh and fifth plays sixth in single-leg eliminators, with the winners traveling to face the second- and third-placed clubs in the semifinals. The final is held at a neutral venue, often Wembley Stadium, to decide the second promotion spot. At the bottom of the table, the four lowest-ranked teams go down to either National League North or National League South.
Viewership
Global live broadcasting is handled exclusively by DAZN via National League TV, streaming matches live and on demand to subscribers in the UK and overseas. In the UK, live streaming during Saturday afternoon games follows the standard UEFA blackout window between 14:45 and 17:15, with evening, bank holiday, and midweek games shown in full. Sizable stadium turnstiles across regional grounds pair with steady streaming interest from fans following the fight to reach the ninety-two-club Football League.
