About Italian Volleyball League
The Italian Volleyball League, officially designated as SuperLega (historically Serie A1), is the top division of men's professional club volleyball in Italy. Administered by Lega Pallavolo Serie A under the Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV), the championship runs from October through May. Regarded globally as the strongest and most competitive domestic volleyball league in the world, it attracts the sport's premier international talent and consistently determines Italy's entries for the CEV Champions League and secondary European club tournaments.
Top teams
Sir Susa Vim Perugia, Itas Trentino, and Cucine Lube Civitanova lead the championship tier, regularly claiming domestic scudetti and European silverware. Traditional giants like Modena Volley hold deep historical records, while Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, Allianz Milano, Vero Volley Monza, and Rana Verona continually challenge the top seeds with loaded international lineups. League roster regulations require at least three Italian players on the court at all times, creating a balance between homegrown national team talent and elite foreign signings.
Format
Twelve clubs contest a twenty-two-match double round-robin regular season, playing every opponent home and away. Matches follow standard volleyball table scoring: 3 points for a 3–0 or 3–1 win, 2 points for a 3–2 win, 1 point for a 3–2 loss, and 0 points for a sweep. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the single-elimination Scudetto playoffs, contested over best-of-five quarterfinal, semifinal, and final series. The lowest-ranked club in 12th place is automatically relegated to Serie A2, while clubs eliminated early contest a separate playoff bracket to determine qualification for lower-tier CEV competitions.
Viewership
In Italy, live television broadcasts are shared between state broadcaster Rai (broadcasting free-to-air weekly marquee matches and playoff fixtures on Rai Sport and RaiPlay) and DAZN, which streams multiple weekly matches live. Worldwide broadcasting outside Italy is centralized through Volleyball World's direct streaming platform, VBTV, which carries full live feeds, statistics, and on-demand replays of every regular-season and playoff encounter. Sold-out crowds in packed venues like PalaBarton in Perugia and il T quotidiano Arena in Trento drive strong domestic attendance alongside high international streaming audiences.
