About German Super Cup

The Franz Beckenbauer Supercup (historically the DFL-Supercup) is the official German football season opening match, organized by the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL). Played each August before the start of the Bundesliga, the single-match fixture pits the reigning Bundesliga champion against the winner of the DFB-Pokal to award the first domestic trophy of the season.

Top teams

Bayern Munich leads the competition with twelve titles, followed by Borussia Dortmund with six. The fixture frequently serves as a Der Klassiker meeting between Bayern and Dortmund, with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, and VfB Stuttgart also making recent appearances. When one club wins both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal in the same season, the league runner-up automatically qualifies to play for the trophy.

Format

The competition consists of a single 90-minute regulation match. If the score is tied at full time, no extra time is played; the winner is decided directly by a penalty shootout. The match is typically hosted at the home ground of the DFB-Pokal winner (or the Bundesliga runner-up in a double scenario), though the DFL holds final authority over venue selection.

Viewership

In Germany, domestic pay-TV and streaming coverage is exclusive to Sky Sport across its linear channels, Sky Go, and the WOW streaming service, with free-to-air coverage broadcast on Sat.1 and streamed on Joyn. In Spain, live broadcast coverage is exclusive to DAZN. In the United States, the match streams live on ESPN+, while Sky Sports carries the broadcast in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
