About German BBL
The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) is the top professional men's basketball league in Germany. It's an 18-team competition that runs from September through June. The league has grown rapidly in recent years, fueled by the success of the German national team. The regular season is in the final stretch, with the playoffs taking place in May and June.
Top teams
Alba Berlin and FC Bayern München are the two giants. Both clubs are regulars in the EuroLeague and have deep budgets. Alba has a strong youth development system and plays a fast, modern style. Bayern relies on veteran talent and defensive discipline. Other top clubs include ratiopharm Ulm, Telekom Baskets Bonn, and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg. The league is top-heavy, but the playoffs are unpredictable.
Format
The league has 18 teams. Each plays each other twice in the regular season. The top eight teams advance to the playoffs. The quarterfinals and semifinals are best-of-five series. The final is a best-of-five series for the championship. The bottom two teams are relegated to the ProA (second division). The format rewards regular-season performance while leaving room for upsets in the playoffs.
Viewership
The BBL pulls around 8 million viewers annually. The numbers are strongest in Germany, where basketball has grown in popularity since the 2023 FIBA World Cup win. Alba Berlin and Bayern Munich matches draw the biggest audiences. The playoff finals are the biggest TV draw of the season. International interest comes from basketball fans who follow German clubs in the EuroLeague.
Streaming options in Germany
In Germany, MagentaSport is the official home of the BBL, broadcasting every league game. The rights run through the 2025-26 season. There's no free-to-air coverage for the regular season. Some playoff games may be shown on public television.
International streaming options
For fans outside Germany, there's no exclusive international broadcaster for the BBL. Select matches, particularly those involving EuroLeague teams like ALBA Berlin and FC Bayern Munich, may appear on international platforms like Sportdigital. To access MagentaSport from outside Germany, using a VPN set to a German server is the most reliable method. Courtside 1891 covers select FIBA-affiliated European competitions, which sometimes include top German teams in European play.
Streaming options in the US and Canada
In the US and Canada, there's no exclusive broadcaster for the BBL. The most reliable option is a VPN to access MagentaSport from Germany. EuroLeague TV (via EuroLeague TV) carries ALBA and Bayern matches when they play in European competitions.
