About French Top 14
The Top 14 is the premier division of professional rugby union in France, organized by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR). Running from September through late June, fourteen clubs contest a twenty-six-round regular season followed by a six-team playoff bracket to lift the historic Bouclier de Brennus. Renowned as the wealthiest and most star-studded domestic club competition in world rugby, the league pairs heavy forward set-piece battles with high-speed offloading play, while also determining French seeding for the European Rugby Champions Cup.
Top teams
Stade Toulousain dominates the historical record with twenty-three national titles, consistently setting the competitive benchmark behind Antoine Dupont and a roster packed with French internationals. Union Bordeaux Bègles, Stade Rochelais (La Rochelle), and Racing 92 field elite squads capable of contesting both domestic and European finals, while historic champions Stade Français, RC Toulon, and ASM Clermont Auvergne command massive regional followings. Hostile away fixtures at grounds like Castres Olympique, Aviron Bayonnais, and USA Perpignan mean visiting favorites routinely drop points throughout the regular calendar.
Format
Fourteen clubs compete in a double round-robin regular season, playing every opponent once at home and once away. The top two teams earn a direct bye into the playoff semifinals. Clubs finishing third through sixth contest one-off qualification matches (barrages), with third hosting sixth and fourth hosting fifth to complete the final-four field. Semifinals are staged at neutral regional stadiums, leading to the grand final at the Stade de France. At the bottom of the table, the 14th-placed club suffers direct relegation to Rugby Pro D2, while the 13th-placed side faces the Pro D2 playoff runner-up in a single-leg relegation playoff (Access Match).
Viewership
In France, domestic broadcasting is held exclusively by Canal+, which airs every fixture live across Canal+, Canal+ Sport, and its streaming platform myCANAL, with the championship final simulcast free-to-air on public network France 2. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, live coverage is broadcast by Premier Sports. In the United States, matches stream on FloRugby, while viewers in Spain and non-exclusive international territories access live multi-feed streams through the league's official streaming platform, Top 14 Rugby TV. Weekly attendance across French stadiums consistently tops domestic rugby worldwide, culminating in seventy-thousand-seat sellouts for the final.
