About LNH StarLigue
Founded in 1952 and organized by the Ligue Nationale de Handball (LNH), the French LNH Division 1 (known commercially as the Liqui Moly StarLigue and rebranded as the Daikin StarLigue for the 2026/27 cycle) is France's top-flight men's professional handball league. Running from September through June across 16 clubs, it is widely regarded alongside Germany's Handball-Bundesliga as one of the two strongest domestic handball leagues in the world.
All 16 Clubs in 2026/27 & Recent Champions
Paris Saint-Germain Handball (PSG) enter the 2026/27 campaign as the reigning champions after capturing their 12th consecutive French league crown in 2025/26 ahead of perennial challengers HBC Nantes and Montpellier Handball. Following the relegation of Istres Provence Handball and Dijon Métropole Handball at the end of 2025/26, Proligue regular-season champions Saran Loiret Handball and promotion playoff winners Caen Handball join the top flight for 2026/27. The complete 16-club roster features: Paris Saint-Germain Handball, HBC Nantes, Montpellier Handball, Fenix Toulouse Handball, Limoges Handball, USAM Nîmes Gard, Chambéry Savoie Mont-Blanc HB, Saint-Raphaël Var Handball, Pays d'Aix UC (PAUC), Cesson Rennes Métropole HB, Dunkerque Handball Grand Littoral (USDK), C'Chartres Métropole Handball, Tremblay Handball, Sélestat Alsace Handball, Saran Loiret Handball, and Caen Handball.
Historic 2026/27 Format Overhaul: The New Title & European Playoffs
All 16 clubs contest a 30-round home-and-away double round-robin regular season (240 regular-season matches total). However, starting with the 2026/27 season, the LNH abolished the longstanding rule that automatically awarded the French title to the regular-season leader, introducing two postseason knockout brackets:
- Championship Playoffs (1st to 4th Place): The top four clubs at the end of Round 30 lock up European qualification for next season and enter the Championship Playoffs. In the two-legged semi-finals, 1st plays 4th and 2nd plays 3rd (with the second leg hosted by the higher regular-season seed). The two aggregate winners meet in a single-match Grand Final at a neutral venue (with 7-meter penalty throws deciding any tie) to crown the Champion of France and award the automatic EHF Champions League berth.
- European Qualification Bracket (5th to 8th Place): Clubs finishing 5th through 8th enter a separate two-legged knockout bracket (5th vs. 8th and 6th vs. 7th, followed by a two-legged final) to win the final French spot in the EHF European League.
- Relegation (15th & 16th Place): The bottom two clubs (15th and 16th) at the end of the 30-game regular season are relegated directly to the second-tier Proligue.
Where to Watch & Broadcast Reality
In France, live broadcast rights are split between beIN Sports France (€15/month standalone on beIN Sports Connect or bundled via myCanal) and the federation's official OTT platform HandballTV (€4.00/month or €35.00/year): beIN Sports broadcasts the three biggest matches of every StarLigue matchday exclusively live (typically Friday night, Saturday night, and the Sunday afternoon headliner) plus the Trophée des Champions and the new Championship Playoffs, while HandballTV streams the remaining five StarLigue matches per round live (and posts full-match replays of the three beIN Sports games after the final whistle) alongside every second-tier Proligue match. Outside France, HandballTV (€4.00/month or €35.00/year) serves as the global out-of-market streaming pass, while beIN Sports USA and beIN Sports Canada (streamed on Fubo, YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Fanatiz) air the featured weekly PSG, Nantes, and Montpellier televised clashes in North America.
