About French Ligue 2
Ligue 2, commercially named Ligue 2 BKT, is the second division of professional men's football in France, governed by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). Operating directly below Ligue 1, eighteen clubs contest a thirty-four-match season between August and May to earn promotion to the French top flight.
Top teams
The division consists of former top-flight sides seeking promotion alongside established second-tier regulars. Clubs with major historical pedigree including FC Metz, SM Caen, EA Guingamp, ESTAC Troyes, and SC Bastia frequently compete at the top of the table, contested by regional clubs like Paris FC, Grenoble Foot 38, Rodez AF, and Amiens SC.
Format
Eighteen clubs play a double round-robin regular season of thirty-four matches, facing each opponent once home and once away. The top two teams earn automatic promotion to Ligue 1. Teams finishing third, fourth, and fifth enter a tiered promotion playoff: fifth plays fourth in a single-leg match, the winner plays third, and that winner advances to a two-legged playoff against the 16th-placed club from Ligue 1. The bottom two clubs are relegated directly to Championnat National, while the 16th-placed club enters a two-legged relegation playoff against the third-place finisher from National.
Viewership
In France, live domestic broadcasting rights are held exclusively by beIN Sports, which televises fixtures across beIN Sports 1, beIN Sports 2, and beIN Sports MAX channels. In the United States and Canada, coverage is broadcast on beIN Sports and beIN Sports Connect. In Spain, no linear television network holds regular broadcast rights for Ligue 2; select fixtures are occasionally carried on TV5Monde Europe via standard cable/satellite packages, while direct digital feeds remain through international LFP syndication.
