About Formula 3
The FIA Formula 3 Championship is the premier international third-tier single-seater championship, organized by the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale de l'Automobile as an integral part of the official Road to F1 ladder. Running from spring through early autumn as a direct support series to the Formula 1 World Championship, the series serves as the definitive global proving ground for junior racing drivers transitioning from regional Formula 4 categories. With thirty identical Dallara chassis powered by bespoke 3.4-litre Mecachrome V6 engines, the category strips away mechanical engineering discrepancies to ensure outcomes hinge entirely on driving precision, tyre management, and racecraft.
Top teams
Prema Racing and Trident represent the championship's benchmark outfits, consistently trading teams' and drivers' titles through exceptional engineering baseline setups and driver coaching. Established junior powerhouses such as ART Grand Prix, Campos Racing, Hitech Pulse-Eight, and MP Motorsport regularly contest victories and podium sweeps across every round, while outfits like Rodin Motorsport and Van Amersfoort Racing frequently disrupt the top spots. Because junior drivers are heavily backed by Formula 1 junior academiesโincluding Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes, and McLarenโteam setups must deliver instant adaptation across a calendar featuring zero private testing.
Format
Each race weekend consists of a single 45-minute practice session and a critical 30-minute qualifying session on Friday. The results of Friday qualifying set the starting grid for Sunday's headline Feature Race, with the pole position winner awarded two championship points. For Saturday's Sprint Race, the top twelve qualifiers are reversed on the starting grid, forcing the fastest drivers to navigate high-risk overtaking battles through the field. Points are distributed to the top ten finishers in both races, with the Feature Race offering a higher 25-point payout for victory alongside a bonus point for fastest lap inside the top ten.
Viewership
Because every round runs on the support bill of Formula 1 Grands Prix, races benefit from extensive international broadcast distribution. Live coverage is delivered globally via Formula 1's proprietary over-the-top streaming service, F1 TV Pro, alongside official championship feeds. Linear broadcasts are carried across primary regional sports networks holding F1 rights, including Sky Sports F1 in the United Kingdom, DAZN in Spain and Japan, Canal+ in France, Sky Sport in Germany and Italy, and ESPN networks in the Americas. Races run in front of packed Sunday grandstands, attracting intense viewing from Formula 1 team principals, driver management scouts, and dedicated motorsport supporters tracking the sport's next generation.
