About FA Cup
The Football Association Challenge Cup, known under title sponsorship as the Emirates FA Cup, is the oldest national knockout football competition in the world. First played in the 1871–72 season, the tournament runs from August through May, bringing together hundreds of clubs across the entire English football pyramid. The champion lifts one of the most recognized trophies in world sport, secures an automatic spot in the league phase of the UEFA Europa League, and qualifies for the FA Community Shield.
Top teams
Arsenal holds the all-time tournament record with fourteen titles, closely trailed by Manchester United with thirteen. Modern giants Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool consistently field deep squads to make deep Wembley runs, while ambitious sides like Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur target the cup to end long trophy droughts. Because the draw is entirely unseeded, regional non-league underdogs and lower-tier clubs frequently draw Premier League giants, creating iconic "giant-killing" moments on tight non-league pitches.
Format
The tournament starts in late summer with six regional qualifying rounds for semi-professional and amateur clubs before entering the First Round Proper in November. League One and League Two teams enter in the first round, while Premier League and Championship clubs join in the third round in January. Every round is a single-elimination knockout tie settled on the day using extra time and penalty shootouts if needed, with traditional replays completely removed from the competition format. The semifinals and final are contested at Wembley Stadium in London.
Viewership
In the UK, live broadcast coverage is led by TNT Sports alongside streaming on discovery+, with terrestrial free-to-air coverage of select matches, semifinals, and the final shared with the BBC across BBC One and BBC iPlayer. In the United States, games stream exclusively on ESPN+. Across the rest of the world, rights are distributed through networks like Sportsnet in Canada, beIN Sports across Australia and the Middle East, and regional sports channels throughout Europe and Asia, consistently drawing packed Wembley crowds and massive global viewing figures for third-round weekend and the May final.
