About Czech Extraliga
The Czech Extraliga (Tipsport Extraliga) is the top tier of professional ice hockey in the Czech Republic. It is a league defined by blistering speed, elite technical skill, and some of the most intimidating, pyrotechnic-fueled atmospheres in European sports. Running from September through April, it serves as the ultimate domestic battleground for Czech talent and a highly respected proving ground for imports looking to make their mark before heading to the NHL or other top European leagues.
Top teams
HC Oceláři Třinec has established a modern dynasty, blending relentless forechecking with deep championship pedigree. HC Sparta Praha is the traditional powerhouse, backed by massive resources and a fanatical Prague fanbase that expects nothing less than a title. HC Dynamo Pardubice and HC Škoda Plzeň consistently bring high-end offensive firepower, while historic clubs like HC Kometa Brno ensure that no road game is ever a casual stroll for the favorites.
Format
The regular season is a grueling 52-game schedule where 14 teams face each other four times. The top six clubs lock in direct quarterfinal spots. Teams finishing seventh through tenth must survive a brutal best-of-five pre-playoff round just to claim the final two postseason berths. From the quarterfinals onward, it shifts to a ruthless best-of-seven knockout gauntlet. At the bottom of the table, the lowest-ranked teams face a tense relegation battle against the top clubs from the Chance Liga (1st Liga) to avoid the drop.
Viewership
Ice hockey is a religion in the Czech Republic, and the Extraliga regularly boasts some of the highest average attendance figures in all of Europe. Arenas in Prague, Třinec, and Pardubice are loud, hostile environments for visiting teams, sustained by deep-rooted regional rivalries and a culture that lives and breathes the sport. For followers outside the country, the league’s footprint is highly accessible. Games are widely available through the league's own centralized digital streaming platform and select regional sports networks, making it easy to track every heavy hit and overtime winner without hunting down obscure local cable packages.
