Copa Sudamericana Overview & Format

The Copa Sudamericana is the premier second-tier annual international club football competition in South America, organized by CONMEBOL. Serving as the continental equivalent to the UEFA Europa League, the tournament features dozens of elite clubs from across the ten CONMEBOL member associations. The competition begins with preliminary qualifying rounds that feed into a rigorous group stage, where 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four, playing a double round-robin format. The group winners advance to a high-stakes knockout phase, progressing through the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, and Semi-finals via two-legged ties, before culminating in a single-match Final at a pre-determined neutral venue to crown the champion.
