About Canadian Elite Basketball League
The Canadian Elite Basketball League is Canada's premier domestic basketball championship, officially recognized by Canada Basketball and operating under FIBA rules. Running during the summer months from late May through August, the CEBL fills a prime window on the sports calendar when traditional winter leagues are in their off-season. Built around a core requirement for homegrown Canadian talent alongside skilled international imports, the circuit brings fast-paced, high-level basketball to major and mid-sized arenas across the country.
Top teams
The Edmonton Stingers and Scarborough Shooting Stars have established themselves as perennial title contenders, backed by disciplined rosters and deep playoff experience. The Calgary Surge and Niagara River Lions regularly contend at the top of their respective conferences with aggressive perimeter play and stout rim protection, while the Vancouver Bandits, Ottawa BlackJacks, and Saskatchewan Rattlers keep the standings tight all summer long. With shorter seasons and single-elimination stakes, momentum down the stretch often matters far more than early-season records.
Format
Ten clubs are divided into Eastern and Western Conferences, each playing a twenty-game regular-season slate. The CEBL is widely known for using the Elam Ending (Target Score Ending) in every game: at the first dead ball under four minutes in the fourth quarter, the game clock is turned off and a target scoreโthe leading team's total plus nine pointsโis established, guaranteeing every contest finishes on a made basket. Postseason qualifiers clash in play-in and quarterfinal rounds, culminating in the neutral-host Championship Weekend where the final four battle through single-elimination semifinals and the title game.
Viewership
The league reaches domestic fans through national broadcast partnerships with TSN, including linear telecasts of marquee matchups and digital coverage across TSN+. Free digital streams on the CEBL+ OTT app and CBC Sports digital platforms provide accessible viewing across Canada and internationally. Packed arenas during the summer months and strong online engagement have made the league an important proving ground for U Sports standouts, G League veterans, and national team contributors looking to stay game-ready.
